The scoreline of 4-2 looks like a comfortable win for Bodmin but they have the home side to thank for shooting themselves in the foot with some really poor defending. A penalty and a needless free kick conceded on the edge of the box accounted for two of their goals. Add to that a lucky deflection which fortuosly fell to the feet of Ollie Brockenshire and you will see that at the end of the day there was not a lot to choose between the two sides.
The first half was an even affair but Cully were found out on the stroke of half time when a Brockenshire through ball fell to Oakley and his shot found it’s way into the bottom corner of Alex Berry’s goal. Rangers were soon level after the break when Jordan Harris was set up by some unselfish play by Ollie Aplin and he finished from six yards. Rangers were looking the better side now but a long ball out of defence was misjudged by Letori and fell to the feet of Steer who cleverly won a penalty when going under the challenge of Beechy. Brockenshire made it 3-0 shortly after and with ten minutes left on the clock Greeno brought down Steer on the edge of the box and Cowell stepped up to sweep home the resultant feee kick. Rangers threw themselves a lifeline when Brandon Parsons struck home a loose ball from ten yards. The home side were now on the offensive but were ignored a clear cut penalty when Parsons was pushed over in the box but in the words of the referee there was only “minimal” contact. A goal then would have made for an interesting final five minutes but it was not to be.
Manager Liam Raybould felt that “we played some excellent football but were made to pay for our mistakes which is what you expect from a quality team like Bodmin. What is hard to take though is that we have had a player booked for dissent as a result of the match official ignoring what nearly everyone on the ground thought was a clear spot kick but we will have to learn from it and move on and bear in mind that no matter what we think, the referee is always right, even when he is wrong, if that makes sense!”
Team: Berry, Letori(Orchard 75mins), Beech, Ansell, Reed, Thomas, Riggs(Greening 75 mins), Baily(Harris 20 mins), B. Parsons, Aplin, Langabeer. Attendance 92.
