Cullompton welcomed table toppers Sidmouth Town to Adoptstar Park, goping to stop them running away with the league title.
Heavy rain over the last few days had put this game in doubt, taking a couple of pitch inspections before the referee gave the go ahead.
A large crowd saw Sidmouth kick off and it was obvious from the start the heavy pitch would prevent attractive football.
Both sides found it difficult to mount any serious attacks, but it was Cullompton who broke the deadlock, when good play down the right resulted in Lewis Hill opening the scoring.
From the restart the home side gained control, and with veteran defender Craig Woodman marshaling the defence, snuffing out any danger from Sidmouth’s attack.
It was Cullompton who looked the more likely to score, creating several good chances. However, a mixture of poor finishing and some good saves from the Sidmouth keeper, prevented the home side increasing their lead at the break.
When the second half began, it was no surprise that Sidmouth would be on the attack, looking to equalise and get back into the game.
Cullompton though were well up for the task, and although Sidmouth had the majority of the ball, it was not until the 79th minute that they created their first chance, seeing a snap shot well saved by Cullompton’s keeper Jim Weeks.
He was called into action minutes later, pushing a goal bound effort around the post for a corner.
With Jim in goal and the back four defending well, Cullompton were able to see out the rest of the game with no further scares.
A very good display from Cullompton, and it was good to see Aiden Horne returning from injury.
Final score: Cullompton 1 Sidmouth 0
